Life as a Transgender Person
Calpernia is such a beautiful woman… inside and out. This is a great set of educational videos for everyone. There are several really nice videos. I will be suggesting my family see them. I know most of us know who Calpernia is. But for those that do not.
Born as a male in Nashville, TN, Calpernia Adams knew at a young age she was transsexual. In 1999, the tragic murder of her boyfriend, Barry Winchell, led Calpernia to become an activist, speaking out about transgender issues. Calpernia co-founded Deep Stealth Productions, and consulted on the award-winning fim “TransAmerica.” She stars in the new reality dating show, Transamerican Love Story, on Logo.

I was waiting for someone else to post first because I didn’t want to be a sourpuss without someone to balance my negativity…
Honestly, I don’t find Calpernia that engaging. I sympathize with her for all she’s been through, but she doesn’t exactly radiate substance to me. And the Logo show was chock full of really bad cliches (I made it through two episodes before I had to tune out).
Mileage varies by the individual of course.
What? How dare you dis the great Calpernia? Kidding aside, I’d have to agree with you. I’m glad she continues to have many successes in Hollywood, and no doubt she’s persevered through many painful experiences but her style and flair just isn’t my thing.
There, we can get slammed by the fans together.
I have to admit, I have yet to see “TransAmerica” and don’t get the Logo channel on my current satellite subscription plan (BOOO to HughesNet!) so I’ll just sit this one out as an uninformed observer.
If it’s anything like A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila, though… *shudder*
From what I’ve heard of Tila Tequila, it’s not like that. But in the first episode it did have a challenge in which the suitors dressed in loinclothes and spent an evening as Calpernia’s manservants (while she dressed as an Egyptian queen, I might add). So it was exactly the tasteful, high-minded endeavor many people hailed it as.
The suitors were the most interesting part, actually. They had a nice cross-section of participants ranging from the typical “chaser” who also happens to run a transsexual porn site to a FtM transman (which was kept as a surprise from Calpernia) to several who were beyond ordinary (and kind of cute). I think there was something to be learned from them, but unfortunately I couldn’t stomach more than a couple episodes of Calpernia’s antics.
So I guess the point of this post got lost. It’s not about Calpernia. It is about what she is doing for TG people, despite her acting career choices. If you watch the videos one might see that they are nice, simple, informative and lacking in any Calperniaisms. And they are free and professionally done. Thats all.
You’re right, Nikki…. my bad for losing that perspective. The videos themselves (the ones on videojug) are well done and can be used to point family and friends who don’t know much about what it means to be transgender.
I may not care for Calpernia’s other endeavors in the entertainment business, but I’m glad these kind of educational videos are out there.
Agreed. I may not personally like her, but I can’t say she’s been a bad spokesperson for the trans-community.
Although TransAmerican Love Story is still questionable in that regard.
